I too love the little darlings and have a recovering one, named Pootle-Alan, in my garden.I am trying to get him ready for his first hybernation. He has a series of drain pipes set around the garden so he has more cover and I can suppliment his diet without encouraging a nose off or worse with the many cats and foxes round here.
I would add, that as much as I love my little Pootle-Alan ,next spring I will release him into the wilds of the countryside, as my garden is not big enough to accomodate his wanderings.I agree with tiggy winkles that they are not suitable as pets and the fact that they normally have a range of 2 to 3 miles to hunt for food is one of the reasons I think cramming them in a cage or suburban garden is wrong. That and the fact that it is hard to get there natural food elswhere and they end up being fed all sorts of fatty things.they are wild creatures and should be left wild.

poor litle thing....they obviously meant no harm, but it has long been the advice that you don't feed hedgehogs wet cat or dog food ( or bread and milk come to that ) as it has too much fat in in.it is protien they need.lean chicken breast and some of the more expensive complete dried cat foods ( I.E iams )are fine for supplimenting there diet, along with their natural food of insects and slugs. Also , the amount of cat food on that plate is more then I would give my cat!...its poor little tummy!

Greetings! Unfortunately, some pedestrians discover a danger, only sadly when victimized and so I wanted to inform you of StreetZaps, a timely and useful tool intended to reduce the year round risk of injury and fatality from contact voltage. Just so you know, I confer with Con Edison's Stray Voltage and Public Affairs Units and contribute to Wet Nose Guide and New York Dog Chat. It is my firm wish that Environmental Novel visitors will disseminate this vital public service as quickly and as widely as possible to preclude more tragedies. We will post a much safer walking film soon.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.

In appreciation and with best regards,

I do love hedgehogs! I've had several as pets but not at the same time. My first "hedgie," Mr. Neelix, was a little male named after a character in a Star Trek TV series. He was very sweet to me but a terrible little brat concerning my husband. I could be holding and petting him but whenever he heard my husband's voice, "up" would go the spikes and he'd hiss and snap his teeth. Such a little freshy. But I think that's what I liked the most about him--his prickly personality!
