The Wave, the Ribbon and the Flat Earth Society
05/12/2009 by admin.
Some 40,000 people gathered in London today to send a message to world leaders gathering in Copenhagen about the need for action on climate change. Replicating his presence at a similar event recorded in our novel, Ben Whittenbury joined them in his polar bear outfit. Ben, Julia and Sarah enjoyed taking part in the ‘blue human wave’. Sarah loved the open top bus and the many blue ribbon’s waved truimphantly from it. All in all a happy event with a serious message.

Perhaps the organisers, and the PM Gordon Brown, were inspired by our novel - and page 183 in particular! Go take a look it includes the vision of the ‘wave’ symbolising predicted sea level rises and the blue ribbon which features to illustrate our fragile world - just ask Dr Mark Penning, President of WAZA for confirmation on how perilous things are!
Remember people -we’re not one to gloat but we did after all receive the coverted ‘Blue Ribbon Award’ for our efforts. Finally, page 183 also includes a reference to the ‘Flat Earth Society’ to illustrate how people often only grasp the truth when there’s tangible visible and physical evidence! Trouble is we’re at the point of no return! Its all a matter of faith. Bring on the magic fairy dust?

As if by magic it’s Mr Benn!
27/11/2009 by admin.
In our novel, Sarah liken’s her father, Ben Whittenbury to the classic children’s TV character Mr Benn. She did so because of his habit of dressing up in different costumes - a polar bear and an 18th century military man. Mr Benn’s adventures always began when he visited a magical fancy dress shop.
Well, as if by magic the residents of the street that inspired David McKee’s Mr Benn stories have chosen to pay tribute to the writer and character by laying an engraved paving slab outside of David McKee’s former house. For his stories Mr McKee changed Festing Road to Festive Road and had Mr Benn living at number 52, next door to his own house at number 54.

Climate Casino
27/08/2009 by admin.
Although our project is concerned with the big picture on environmental and ecological challenges faced by the natural world, we’re happy to focus this week on climate chaos and activities at the Climate Camp, including the Climate Casino operating outside of the Stock Exchange - colourfully performed by a dozen or so campaigners in fancy dress, with props including the use of large playing cards to illustrate how humanity is gambling with the planet.
We love it as in our novel and Charles Lamb’s journal the Three of Hearts - representing Love, Art and Nature - is a symbol of life as it could be.
In the words of Bruce Forsyth, Play Your Cards Right, come on get involved at home. Your a lovely audience, so much better than last week!

The Beatles at Hertfordshire?
26/07/2009 by admin.
Yesterday, Julia and Ben had the pleasure of going to see the Bootleg Beatles at a charity concert at Hopley’s Gardens in Much Hadham. The performance was just a stone’s throw from the key landmarks in our story: Keeper’s Cottage, Blakesware Manor and St John’s Church Widford. Given the role of The Beatles in our story, how curious that the world’s premier Beatles tribute band should perform in the county during the period of the Watch and at a time when they are celebrating their 30th anniversary!
The Whittenbury’s had a fabulous time and took a few pictures of the celebrated fab four tribute band.
Perhaps their visit has somethng to do with our sequel? Time will out all!
Here’s the link to their website…

Michael Jackson: Rehersal for ‘This is It!’
02/07/2009 by admin.
Footage has been released of Michael Jackson in rehersal for the ‘This is It’ tour.
The video which - was his last ever performance -has a poignant haunting edge to it given the unexpected death of the pop icon. We wonder did the King of Pop unwittingly leave a timely reminder to all of humanity? Why so? Well, the performance concludes with the superstar and his fellow dancers revealing the same palm signal to that recorded in Royston Cave and explored by Charles Lamb in his journal. The hands are also mentioned by ‘The Emperor’ as a clear warning about our treatment of this planet: Stop! Stop! Stop!
Here’s the link to the footage…
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8131776.stm
And here’s a picture of Royston Cave with the hand prints.
One of Michael’s hits was ‘Earth Song’.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOnL5c8LMqM&feature=related
In his words, “Did you ever stop to notice this crying Earth is weeping sure.”
R.I.P Michael - We love you!

Culture Club Crisis
16/01/2009 by admin.
Boy George, the former controversial frontman to the 1980’s band Culture Club, has been given a 15 month prison sentence for false imprisonment and gratuitous violence. A barrister in the case said that, “At the heart of the matter was a descent into self destructive behaviour.” The singer’s solicitor later claimed, “George is on the way to recovery, I sincerely hope this sentence doesn’t knock him back.”
This is George in his hey-day! An artist known for wearing a ribbon or two in his hair and an ambassador for diversity in our world.
So, what does this have to do with the environment, we hear you ask? Simple really - in response to Ben Whittenbury’s decision to draw up ‘The Haymakers Survey’ our Magician invited the climate change sceptics to say no to climate chaos and join the Culture Change Club. The implication is that Boy George’s troubles are a reflection of the unwillingness of many on our planet to take the environment seriously or see any real threat. The culture change required remains a distant vision.
Allow George to take you back to 1870 …

Secret Squirrel - this one’s for you!
11/01/2009 by admin.
Readers of the Watch will know all about the role of squirrels in our story and in helping to spread our message. Well they’ve been up to their tricks again. One has gnawed through cables at the former home of MP Lord Patrick Mayhew sparking a blaze at the cottage in Goudhurst near Cranbrook, Kent. Interestingly, Lord Mayhew was once Attorney General for England and Wales . The role of the Attorney General is to advise and represent the Crown and govenment departments in court. The Attorney General also represents the the Crown in many proceedings representing the public interest.
So, did the squirrel act secretly on behalf of Mother Nature to send a clear signal to humanity that it would be in the public interest to take better care of the environment and the natural world? Perhaps it can be explained away as an anagram of LORD PATRICK MAYHEW is TIP WORLD C HAYMAKER! Do you believe in justice? Secret Squirrel does. Who can’t help but love him…

Nature Personified <> Rescuing Fannie
08/09/2008 by admin.
Artists in Caracas, Venezuela, have used the living human body as a canvas. Amongst the exhibits was Nature Personified, which is very curious given Charles Lamb’s perception of Lucy Ebbs in his journal.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7602547.stm
The exhibition coincided with a £3 trillion rescue package by the US Government for the American lending company, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. “What does this have to do with the environment?”, you may well ask. Well, in our story did not Fanny plead to Ben for help, quote, “Please, I implore you, we have been waiting for so long.” Is this life imitating art? In some ways, the company’s logo resembles Keeper’s Cottage.

Earth Song: Off the Wall and Ben, ‘The force has got a lot of power!’
29/08/2008 by admin.
The eccentric and controversial popstar, Michael Jackson, has celebrated his 50th birthday. It’s not for us to judge his personal life. We just wanted to share some things he said in an interview to a US breakfast show today. He said how much he enjoyed making people happy through his music. The anniversary is curious as in May 2007, the singer auctioned a red-military jacket similar to that discovered Ben during our adventure.
During his interview, the fallen icon said his happiest time was during the release of the album, ‘Off the Wall!” Did he have the Royston Cave in mind?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDzxl_Q0qYE&feature=related
He also had a huge hit with the song, Ben…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSqo17o2a1w
Another amazing video is ‘Don’t stop till you get enough’! Just take a look at those stones? They look just like those sacred to the Royston Cave. As Michael said, ‘The force, it’s got a lot off power!”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_hz2am90Hk&feature=related
So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Michael once performed the ‘Earth Song’!

Let the games begin!
08/08/2008 by admin.
A truely spectacular opening ceremony for the 23rd Olympic games has taken place in Beijing, China. In Malachi’s words, “The World Games are well and truely open!” The ceremony began at 08:08 on the 8th of the 8th 2008 - or ‘Triple 8′ day. The number 8 is revered as a bringer of good fortune. The ceremony occured just one day after the Chinese Valentine’s Day or the Qixi Festival, with the demand for red roses blooming!
The Double Seventh Festival comes with a legend:
‘A long time ago, there was an honest and kind-hearted fellow named Niu Lang (Cowhand). He married a fairy from heaven called Zhi Nu (Weaver Maid) who was in love with him and escaped from heaven to earth secretly. They lived a happy life and she gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven soon found out the secret and the Queen Mother wanted to separate the couple. She used her gold hairpins and made a billowy river between them. The Cowhand and the Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Finally, their loyalty to love touched the magpies, so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand and Weaver Maid to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month.’
