Wellington’s Wake Up Call!

New Zealand is under its heaviest snow in living memory. The once in a life time event saw Wellington experience heavy snow and blizzards with electricity cut and schools closed due to the disruption. Residents took to the streets with cameras to enjoy the snow and keepers at Wellington Zoo gave Happy Feet the lost emperor penguin found sick and starving on the west coast the chance to enjoy the conditions.

In our novel Malachi our messenger warns us - “Snow, did someone say snow?” Well, well, well. Is this the wake up call for humanity about what we’re doing to the planet that the Duke of Wellington warned us about in Charles Lamb’s journal? Coincidental too that the Emperor should have a say - as predicted by Charles. What’s Mother Nature up to?

Habitat enters administration

The suitably titled furniture and retail company Habitat has entered administration, falling fowl of the troubled economic times.

 habitat.jpg

Formed in the 1960s the company’s vision was to challenge the way we think about our living space. They created what we now call ‘Lifestyle’ offering contemporary design at affordable prices.

We find the company’s demise as ironic given its title and branding - its logo is of a house with a heart inside. Habitat destruction in the natural world is currently the prime cause of species extinction worldwide. Clearing habitat for agriculture is the main cause, but others are mining, logging, trawling and urban sprawl. The rapid expansion of the world’s human population is increasing the food requirement substantially.  The outlook’s bleak but, in common with the retail outlet, there’s a rescue plan:

  1. Considering the many irreplaceable ecosystem services provided by natural habitats,
  2. Protecting remaining intact sections of natural habitat,
  3. Educating the public about the importance of natural habitat and biodiversity,
  4. Developing family planning programs in areas of rapid population growth,
  5. Finding ways to increase agricultural output than simply increasing the total land in production,
  6. Preserving habitat corridors to minimize prior damage from fragmented habitats

What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming

“What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming”, sang Christina Aguilera at the opening of the Super Bowl in Texas.  Lost in the moment she fluffed one of the lines from the US national anthem.  She ought to have sung, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” from the Star Spangled banner but belted out, “What so proudly we watched at the twighlight’s last gleaming.”  It’s really strange as she’s sung the anthem many times in public since the age of seven and never messed up yet.

So why now? As Christina is a supported of Defenders of Wildlife, we may have the answer. Remember this is the Whittenbury Watch and one of the most poignant scenes which inspired the Watch is at the start of our environmental novel. It takes place at “twilight’s last gleaming” when Mother Nature symbolically challenges the industrial world to clean up is act.

Maybe the force behind The Haymakers Survey prompted Christina to sing, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming,” to hunderds of millions in the most influential country on Earth and the tune “Yankee doodle”, features time and again, including in Charles Lamb’s journal.  Whilst Sarah played at her own form of super bowls to show that we’re playing with Nature. It’s now or never folks for humanity on planet Earth…

Oh , The Green Bay Packers scored a historic win ove the Pittsburgh Steelers… need we say more?

Watch the birdie

The opening scenes from our novel includes the flight of a white bird over the head of Ben Whittingbury. It happened just after he made his pledge to be Nature’s Champion and before his errie mystical encounter with the Lady in Grey.

In Christian faith the dove represents the Holy Spirit. Its also thought of as a symbol of love and peace. Curiously a white dove has befriended Rebekah Horsfield a 13 year old teenager from Surrey. Rebekah came across the bird last week sitting on the pavement. She approached it and it chose to fly up and sit on her shoulder. It now keeps close to her side and the pair are becoming inseparable. Rebekah has named the bird Snowy! Snowy sits on top of the computer when Rebekah is on the internet. She thinks Snowy might be a magician’s pet.

Meanwhile Bobby Haas a photographer has taken a remarkable arial photograph in Yucatan Mexico of hundreds of flamingos gathered to form the image of a bird. Mr Haas described the shot as the Holy Grail of photography. He said,”The reaction has been remarkable. Some people have said it is divine intervention and proof there is a God.”

Remember we’re counting on you to have faith, live in harmony and peace with Mother Nature and love this planet Earth.

Magical Lightening Strike on Statue of Liberty

On 22 September New York photographer Jay Fine braved a storm to catch on camera a lightening strike on the Statue of Liberty. His amazing photo has caught the imagination of the world. He waited 40 years to get the image.

We’re intrigued for two reasons. First the image was captured on the autumn equinox - a date so significant in our story - see opening sample.  Second, a Statute of Liberty like figure features in Charles Lamb’s journal as Mother Nature standing as if in protest or distress with the beacon lit as a warning or siren. See page [to follow].

It’s a fabulous intriquing coincidence.

Mision cumplida Chile!

‘Mision cumplida Chile’ was the sign held up by the rescue workers after they returned 33 trapped miners to the surface. ‘ means in English ‘Mission accomplished Chile!’

mision-cumplida-chile.jpg

The world watched in joyful awe and wonder amid suspense and jubiliance the miners returned to life to be greeted by loved ones. Each had their own stories to tell and reacted in their own personal way to being rescued.  The miners survived underground for a record 68 to 69 days.  As one story put it the miners claimed, “A deep religious faith powered this rescue; miners, rescuers and families alike believe their prayers were answered.”  The Chilean president declared the rescue a miracle.

Our previous item on the event captured the links with The Haymakers Survey - essentially about living in a cave and the biblical conclusion ‘ out of the depths I cried unto the’.  There are some other coincidences…

The second miner to be rescued brought rocks to the surface as momentoes: our novel refers to the magical stones and the biblical reference ‘I tell you with these stones I can raise children’.

Whilst another miner asked when he got to the surface, ”how the’s dog?’” we wonder if this was in reality a testament to Malachi -our messenger.

It leads us to conclude that the whole episode is a message to humanity - that we can achieve great things together against all odds and that there’s a task to be done - to take proper care of this fragile Earth!

Solar Tsumani

On 1 August we launched online the second novel in The Haymakers Survey trilogy. It’s called ‘Uncle John’s Notebook - Earth Story’. http://watchthehaymakerssurvey.co.uk/

We’re tickled by a curious coincidence. On the same day a rare solar storm occured.

solar-tsunami-august-2010.jpg

The event was witnessed by astronomers worldwide. A huge flare burst out above a sunspot the size of the Earth.  The explosion caused a coronal mass ejection aimed directly at this planet. Experts said the CME would hit the Earth around 3 and 4 August sparking spectacular displays of the aurora.

Dr Lucie Green of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory has been following the flare-ups. She said, “What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing”.  Maybe Mother Nature is celebrating the launch of the online serialisation of our second novel?

A Question of Faith!

In the United States the state of Ohio is known as a ‘bellwether’ which is an entity that serves to create or influence trends or to presage future happenings. Ohio’s motto is ‘With God, all things are possible’.  Perhaps this helps explain why a 60ft statute of Jesus outside the Solid Rock Church in Ohio has burned to the ground after being struck by lightening on Monday during an intense thunderstorm.  With its upraised arms the statute was an iconic figure visible from far around and the sight of it ablaze was very dramatic.

the-king-of-kings-statue.jpg

One of the local observers at the Solid Rock Church suggested that this is a sign from God that we (humanity) are doing something wrong.  Rocks play a significant part in our tale and the statue was at the east side of interstate 75.  Well our question 75 is ‘Have you ever put on a show?’ and at the heart of our survey is faith for we believe that a divine force is behind it. Follow your heart. Expand your mind. Explore this watch against the online novel. Time to act to preserve our natural world is fast running out. The time for hesitation’s through…

Nine Neigh Nine

A horse named Chase has become the first ‘animal ambulance’ in Britain.  Chase will be kitted up with a medical kit and will work with his paramedic owner Mark Bennett who patrols Cannock Chase Country Park in Staffordshire. Chase will be galloping to the aid of people across a 3,000 acre country park.  The seven year old steed starts work with the West Midlands Ambulance Service in June and Mark says, “it might sound crazy but this horse really could save lives. He’s very switched on and fast which is what you need in an emergency.”

We agree but for different reasons. The opening scenes in our novel (see online sample) includes the appearance of a steed galloping to the aid of Mother Nature… with a message from a mysterious Lady in Grey (she symbolises the industrial world) that its not too late to save her Mother Nature. There’s an uncanny resemblance between Chase and the horse recorded in our novel. It’s a nine neigh nine call!

Icelandic Ash Plume

On 21 March we reported on the eruption of a volcano in Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland and the many curiosities with this and accounts in The Haymakers Survey.

http://watch.thehaymakerssurvey.com/2010/03/21/

Well, the volcano burst into life again yesterday. This time the eruption was 10 to 20 times more powerful than the one last month sending a huge plume of ash and dust high into the atmosphere.  What interests us is that the volcanic cloud has been blown south bringing chaos to air travel on a scale not seen since World War II. Flights have been grounded because of the risk to planes caused by glass and rock particles in the air.

An area of high pressure has pushed the cloud over Britain and the other countries mentioned in our story and Charles Lamb’s journal - Scandinavia, France and Russia - home to the Samoyed tribe. Why has this happened now during our Watch - a natural event with its source so close to the home of the Yggdrasil legend having such an impact on the Western world?  At a time when the British public is making up its mind on where to put their X in the ballot paper is this a statement from Mother Earth on environmental and ecological issues? Well on page 96 of our novel malachi warns us ‘Beware for Nature’s wrath knows no bounds’.

Whatever the interpretation the coincidences are mysterious and intriguing. Time for some A-Ha…
