Songs of Innocence and Experience

One of the main inspirations for our project was the artist William Blake.  How coincidental then that Tate Britain are recreating the William Blake 1809 Exhibition in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the first solo exhibition of his work which took place in a small room above a shop in Soho.  This is an artist who was obscure and impoverished at the time yet is now regarded as ‘the greatest most individual genuis of Britsh Art’.  A most worthy acolade for the visionary poet and painter in our view - creating mystical works of otherworldliness and depth. Ironic then that when he first exhibited Blake was derided by the critics and was a commercial failure.  Only by a twist of fate did his work resurface after his death.

William, of course, has a cameo yet insightful role in our story being the guiding light that led us to monitor world events. Could it be that he had some insight on all of this - the array of coincidences reported here  - as our novel suggests? Who can say?

Let’s celebrate by reciting the extract from his ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience’ which acts as an introduction to our tale, designed to give our planet a voice:

Earth’s Answer

‘Earth raised up her head, From the darkness dread and drear. Her light fled, stony dread! And her locks covered with grey despair’.

The exhibition runs until October 2009. We encourage you to pay it a visit.

Trees are the lungs of the Earth!

Our readers will know all about the mystical ‘Tree of Life’ at the heart of our story and recorded in Charles Lamb’s journal.  Yggdrasil is an evergreen or fir tree and represents the essential role of trees in the continued survival of humanity on this planet. Trees are often said to be the ‘Lungs of the Earth’ so at a time when deforestation threatens the beauty of the Amazon rainforest isn’t it strange that a small fir tree has been found within the lungs of a man?

 fir-tree-in-lung.jpg

Reports claim that Artyom Sidorkin from Russia inhaled a seed which then sprouted inside him. After he complained of severe chest pains, doctors were convinced he had cancer after an X-Ray revealed what appeared to be a tumour.

 tree-x-ray.jpg

However when he operated, Dr Kamashev, thought he was hallucinating for growing inside Mr Sidorkin’s lungs was a 2 inch spruce!  He blinked three times as he was sure he was seeing things!

The presence of the tree is a real mystery as biologists say it is absolutely impossible for a green plant to grow from a seed inside a mans body; claiming that they need certain conditions -light, water and certain temperatures.  So, we have a person from Russia - home of the Samoyed tribe - operated on by a doctor whose names (Artyom and Kamashev) include the word HAYMAKERS!  It’s magic!

Is There A Cure For A Broken Heart?

Love is one of the key three themes embedded in our novel. But today we ask is there a cure for a broken heart?

earth-heart.gif OR  a-broken-heart.jpg ?

Why? The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has urged a radical change of heart in order to prevent runaway climate change. He said humanity should turn away from the selfishness and greed that leads it to ignore the interdependence with the natural world.  He warned that God would not guarentee a ‘happy ending’, saying, “God’s faithfulness stands, assuring us that even in the most appalling disaster love will not let us go - but it will not be a safety net that guarantees a happy ending in this world.”

Without a change of heart, Dr Williams warned, the world faced a number of “doomsday scenarios” including the “ultimate tragedy” of humanity gradually “choked, drowned, or starved by its own stupidity.” The poorest and most vulnerable and our children and grandchildren would pay the heaviest price for climate change, he added.

Given the spiritual nature running through our story and the curious numerous examples of coincidences we’ve witnessed since we began our Watch, we are moved to ask once more are we being warned by an unseen force of the need to act and do so now? Let us heed the final words in our book… in the footnotes, ‘Out of the depths I have cried unto the‘. You decide!

For now we ask, if Mother Nature could sing might she plead…

A fishy tale?

A lost mobile phone has been found in the belly of a massive cod.  The phone slipped from the pocket of Andrew Cheatle into the sea but was found a week later by fisherman Glen Kerley who rang Rita Smith 33, Andrew’s girlfriend.  The fisherman had been gutting the cod that morning at his stall and found the mobile inside.   The phone was a bit smelly but he was happy to return it.  Andrew had to change the circuit board but the phone now works fine. He said’ I know it sounds a fishy tale but its 100% true.”

cod-phone.jpg

All very intriguing given the role of a mobile phone in Charles Lamb’s journal and Bill Richmond’s comments about the world being a far stranger place than we realise supported by his words about fish falling from the sky.  Its also fun that the names of the 3 people involved in the story include letters that spell out HAYMAKERS! Perhaps this is really a reminder about the need to guard against overfishing.

Runaway Horse in Paris!

As if to vindicate our recent story about the Black Horse logo for Lloyds TSB Bank we have another curious example of a runaway horse - this time in Paris. The horse named Garibaldi raced along next to the River Seine having thrown his rider, a member of the republican guard.

 french-republican-guard.jpg

Police cars tracked the horse for some 15 minutes as it raced through several red traffic lights.  Fortunately, the horse was wearing a high visibility jacket, which may have helped save it from serious injury.  The sound of the galloping horse reminded Ben of his early encounter (see novel extract). Its curious too that the horse chose France to put on his show given the French connection in our tale.  However, probably the most striking thing about the performance was the red light jumping - was this symbolic of human behaviour - pressing ahead regardless with our exploitation of Nature and continued dependence on fossil fuel despite the warning signs advising us to STOP!

I Luv U

Saying ‘I Luv U’ by text is contributing to the demise of the art of romance. As Valentine’s Day approaches, a National Trust survey of some 2,500 adults showed two-thirds admitted to saying, “I Luv U” in a text, whilst a similar number had never spent time writing a romantic love letter of composing a poem for their beloved.

 i-loveyou.jpg

The National Trust blame a combination of technology and the modern pace of life for killing off romance.  A Trust spokesperson said, “Considering our rich history of romantic letter writing, poems and sonnets - from Shakespeare to Burns - it all suggests we are forgetting to make time for romance in modern Britain.  Yet now we have forgotten the value of putting our innermost feelings down on writing! Pity as the survey showed that 3 out of 4 women would prefer a love letter of dedicated poem than a simple text saying, “I Luv U”.

All very revealing given the role played by Sarah’s mobile in our story and the way in which Charles Lamb’s journal records several examples of love penned by his hand and others in poetry and letters.

Dog owner saves pet from icy lake <> Sirius Star

On New Year’s Day, Marc Greenhalgh was out walking in Alkrington Woods, Middleton, when his dog, Jarvis, ran onto the ice to chase ducks.  When the ice broke the dog struggled to get out so Marc plunged into the lake to rescue him.  The scene pictured below could well have been taken direct from Charles Lamb’s journal - when he had to rescue Malachi after he slipped through a frozen lake (page 378 of the story).

dog-rescue.jpg

Although he was criticised by the authorities for putting his own life in peril, a passer-by who took the photo praised him for his bravery, “A lot of people would say he was idiotic to risk his life for an animal, but I thought he was really brave. If my dog was in danger I’d like him to be there.”

SIRIUS STAR

sirius-star.jpg

On November 15 2008, the oil tanker, Sirius Star, was hijacked by Somali pirates, becoming the largest ship ever captured.   The tanker has a capacity of 2 million barrels of crude oil and an overall length of 333 metres.  The cargo is worth some $100m.  The two month stand off ended today as the ship was released after a ransom of $3m was parrachuted on board.  However, the twist in the tale was that five of the pirates drowned with their share of the ransom after their small boat capsized.

Aside from the natural justice against the pirates, the hijack is interesting as Charles Lamb’s journal recalls how he and Mary Shelley speculated on the presence of Sirius the brightest star in the sky.  Here’s the extract from 30 December 1822:

“Together she and I stood after dusk on the terrace overlooking the wilderness garden. On a misty night, only one star broke through to shine in the sky overhead. Confidently dismissing the myth that the star can cause madness, we secretly dedicated the bluish white light of Sirius in the constellation Canis Major to the late Percy Shelley. His light shall not fade!”

Sirius is also know as the Dog Star, which is fascinating given the role of the dog Malachi as our Messenger.

So, is the whole hijack experience designed to remind us to switch from our dependence on crude oil?

World Wrestling Entertainment: Britney Spears versus Billie Shears

Happy 27th Birthday Britney Spears. Let’s celebrate - in the last year, Britney Spears was the most searched for term on Yahoo.com.  There are billions of searches each year and the troubled pop artist drew more hits than Barack Obama.  He was third on the list, behind Britney and ‘World Wrestling Entertainment’.

This is all very interesting as some recent buyers of our novel initially mistook it to be by Britney Spears, not Billie Shears.  This was simply an ‘at a glance’ problem, but their names are very similar and rhyme.

Then we realise that Britney’s breakthrough song was, ‘Baby one more time’ with the lyrics, ‘Give me a sign, hit me…” She still believes. Do you? Here’s the video, complete with the clock ringing at 3.00.

 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_bsniYwSaWg

Curious as a definition of ‘Haymaker’ includes one able to deliver a good punch. Which leads us on to the ‘World Wrestling Entertainment’. Interesting as ‘throwing a haymaker’ is a wrestling move.

world-wrestling-entertainment.jpg

Perhaps this all explains why Britney Spears made an appearance on the show, ‘The X Factor’?  Does not our novel ask whether we - the human race - have the X factor? Are we equipped to care for our planet and its eco-systems? Why Britney even chose to wear a top hat, just like the mysterious man in the shadows - the character orchastraing our story is clearly making a big impression.

Love is in the air!

Barbara Maggs and James McLoud, a couple of toastmasters who have helped 500 weddings to run smoothly, have married each other.  The couple met four years ago and chose to tie the knot today in Thornbury.  Barbara is one of only 12 professionally-trained women toastmasters in the whole of the country.  Her role includes announcing the cutting of the cake and the after-dinner speeches.  They are understood to be the only married toastmasters in the UK.   All very interesting given the importance of love in our story and how much toast figured as Ben, Julia and Sarah first tried to make sense of the 12 ’sacred’ stones used by Sarah in an innocent game of marbles!

toastmasters.jpg

Meanwhile, a Torquay couple, have become the first to marry in what’s believed to be Britain’s oldest human-inhabited prehistoric cave system - Kent’s Cavern in Devon.  Axes found in the cave have been dated at 450,000 years ago.  The temperature inside the cave is a constant 14c.  Ms Woodland and Mr Duckworth offered the guests a cake with figurines of a cave man and cave woman on top!  Most curious given the talk in our tale of  ‘not going back to living in a cave!’ and the role of the Royston Cave.

Three Miracles: The whirlpool, Dixie magic and return of the historic Watch

Sgt Mark Baxter has told how swift action led to the rescue of his three year old daughter, Leona, after she was sucked into a storm drain and swept 200 feet along a drainpipe and into the River Wear.  Leona was playing in what appeared to be a large puddle before she disappeared into what appeared to be like a whirlpool in the middle of the puddle.  Her father quickly realised that she’d fallen into a drain that led to the river and dashed to save her.  Leona is barely 3 feet tall and weighs just 3 stone.  Leona’s mother said, “We are the luckiest parents alive, someone must have been watching over us.”

A whirlpool features more than once in our story. Here’s one in action…

A miracle of another kind has taken place involving an animal called Dixie.   A family in Birmingham were delighted when an RSPCA officer turned up with their cat missing for nearly a decade!  The owners were overjoyed at the micro-chipped cat’s return, and amazed that Dixie seems to have retained all her personality and mannerisms. The owner, Mrs Delaney, says the cat has hardly stopped purring since her return.  Sarah’s told her pet Dixie all about the happy ending!

In a miraculous set of events, a historic watch belonging to a champion has been reunited with its Hertfordshire owner.  The 100 year old watch awarded to James Douglas Edgar to honour his victory in the Canadian Golf Open in 1919 was stolen from Wheathampstead Golf Club in February 2008.  Yet last week James’ grandson, Douglas, received a phone call from a jewellery collector who bought the watch at a car boot sale in Surrey.   The woman, Mandy, showed the watch to her parents - who live in Harpenden in Hertfordshire - and they instantly recognised it as the missing watch.  The circumstances are a little different but its curious that a Hertfordshire champion’s watch was lost then miraculous found again, something Ben Whittenbury and Malachi know all about - an event that triggered our Watch!

champions-watch.jpg

What we take from these 3 stories is that it’s not too late for humanity to change our relationship with the Earth -we can still secure the miracle needed to preserve the natural world on this planet blue in a sea of black.
