A tipping point?

Mother Nature is benevolent and kind at heart - she loves the human race. We are the controlling species on planet Earth tasked with the responsibility to live sustainably and respect wildlife and the environment. The cyclone we reported yesterday provides a perfect example. Amid the fury of the storm an English midwife from Hertfordshire on holiday in Australia celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary delivered a baby at an evacuation centre in Cairns. The infant’s mother has chosen to name the child Lucie - the name of Mother Nature personified in The Haymakers Survey.  The new arrival coincided with the storm’s path avoiding the most populated areas of the continent.

tipping-point.jpg

But this kindness comes at a time when the evidence is mounting up that humanity is on the verge of a global crisis. Take these examples:

  • Globally 2010 was the warmest year on record, arguably due in the main to human related activity.
  • 2010 saw the Amazon experience a severe drought (worse than that in 2005, which was described then as a once in a century event). Scientists suggest this is further evidence of the Amazon’s vulnerability to rising global temperatures.
  • Experts say we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every day due to rainforest deforestation
  • If current trends continue 40% of the Amazon rainforest will be lost to soy production and palm oil by 2050
  • Extreme weather conditions in Russia, Australia, USA, and Malaysia are having a major impact on key food production and availability driving up prices worldwide and triggering civil discontent in the middle East.
  • Whilst an astonishing One in Ten adults on Earth are officially obese as more countries adopt Western lifestyles - levels double what they were 30 years ago.  As people in the UK eat 3.5 times more meat than that recommended by the World Health Organisation, contributing to cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
  • All this as globally meat production is set to double from 2001 to 2050.
  • Yet in the UK, for example, 8.3 millions tons of food is thrown away by households every year.
  • And about 1.5 tons of rubbish is thrown away by an average UK family - that’s like throwing half an elephant into a landfill.
  • Little wonder then that a UN report out today warns that the world’s population growth must slow significantly to avoid reaching unsustainable levels, which means fertility must fall below replacement level.  Numbers are expected to reach 7 billion later this year and 14 billion by 2,100.
  • More people to do more consuming - in its State of the World 2010 report the Worldwatch Institute found the world consumed $350 trillion goods and services in a year - up by nearly 30% on the previous decade.  The world now digs up the equivalent of 112 Empire State buildings in materials every day.  The average American consumes about 144 pounds of goods every day, more than the average weight of a US male. The Institute warns that without a shift from consumerism to sustainablity humanity will face hazardous environmental and climate risks.

This isn’t us being pessimistic or doom mongers - these are facts, not signs. We can’t go on like this - like a plague of locusts devouring all before us.  Someone needs to stand up and say, “Enough”. Time for International Rescue…

Ancient statue uncovered by Israel storm

A huge winter storms in Israel has brought 100kmph winds and 10 meter high winds crashing onto the coast. The harsh weather brought disruption and chaos but also revealed an unexpected surprise - the discovery on an amazing ancient 2,000 year old Roman statue in amazing condition.

 roman-statue.jpg

The headless marble figure of a woman was found on the beach at Ashkelon after the partial collapse of a cliff due to the wind, high seas and rain.  The woman is thought to be Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love.

Given the significance of Roman marble statues in the Justice Hall at Blakesware Manor where the Haymakers Survey was first conceived, we wonder is this another poignant reminder from Mother Nature to love the natural world? In our story Caleb Hitch advised us to look to the Holy Land as a point in the curious mystical triangle of magic behind the Haymakers Survey.

It’s unbelievable to be part of this.

The Emperor’s last stand

It’s Halloween and we have a horror story to report. Our novel records the role of The Emperor in orchestrating the magical events in our story about Mother Nature. Well we’re sad to report that a magnificent stag known as the Emperor of Exmoor has been shot dead by poachers.  The animal who stood 8ft tall and weighed 300lbs was killed for his prized huge antlers.  The majestic red deer was shot at the height of the rutting season.  He was last caught on camera on 8 October.

emperor-of-exmoor.jpg

As The Emperor is behind the magic in our novel - the creative force behind Nature - maybe we are nearing some form of conclusion. The evidence is mounting. A global conservation study reveals that one fifth of the world’s population of plants and animals are now under threat of extinction.  An eniment ecologist, Professor Edward O Wilson of Harvard University, said, “The backbone of bio-diversity is being eroded”.  However, the report does highlight some real successes on conservation.

Many factors are driving the demise - pollution and contamination in the air at land and sea, global population growth (now at 6.87billion), deforestation, economic pressures, loss of habitat, climate change, poaching, misguided beliefs about medical benefits of prized animal parts, greed and a throw-away consumption based culture.  We’re being warned - put bluntly less on all of this means more!

Meantime let’s honour the Emperor..

Light of the World?

A unique Roman lantern made of bronze has been discovered in a field in Sudbury, Suffolk by Danny Mills - a young metal detector enthusiast. The lantern’s believed to be the only one of its kind in Britain. Dating from around the 3rd century AD the object’s been restored to its former glory by Emma Hogarth, Conservator at Colchester and Ipswich museums. Emma was amazed that the chains that suspend the lantern showed no sign of corrosion and move like any modern chain.

sudbury-roman-lantern.jpg

Coincidentally, our novel reveals how a metal detector leads to the discovery of buried treasure. More exciting perhaps is how Charles Lamb’s journal tells how they use a lantern when first entering mystical Royston cave. Here’s the extract from page 397

“Stukeley hung his perforaed lantern on a swivelling hook. Before it settled its light settled like a pendulum casting shadows that danced about the cave. As the carvings flickered in the unnatural light I wondered about the invisible people from days gone by whose feet had traversed the floor of the cave, whose hands had carved the figures into the stone. What would they make of us?”

A Question of Faith!

In the United States the state of Ohio is known as a ‘bellwether’ which is an entity that serves to create or influence trends or to presage future happenings. Ohio’s motto is ‘With God, all things are possible’.  Perhaps this helps explain why a 60ft statute of Jesus outside the Solid Rock Church in Ohio has burned to the ground after being struck by lightening on Monday during an intense thunderstorm.  With its upraised arms the statute was an iconic figure visible from far around and the sight of it ablaze was very dramatic.

the-king-of-kings-statue.jpg

One of the local observers at the Solid Rock Church suggested that this is a sign from God that we (humanity) are doing something wrong.  Rocks play a significant part in our tale and the statue was at the east side of interstate 75.  Well our question 75 is ‘Have you ever put on a show?’ and at the heart of our survey is faith for we believe that a divine force is behind it. Follow your heart. Expand your mind. Explore this watch against the online novel. Time to act to preserve our natural world is fast running out. The time for hesitation’s through…

An Octopus’ Garden

President Obama today announced an enquiry into the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.  The developing environmental consequences of the giant oil leak have been in the media spotlight for some time. Between 5,000 -10,000 barrels of crude oil per day have been gushing out of the underwater oil leak since 20 April after the Deepwater Horizon rig sank.  There are a range of ongoing efforts to contain the leak and attempts at reassurance from British Petroleum.  There’s now talk of litigation.

If we think about it the oil slick is a consequence of the world’s love affair with oil as a power source. The incident reminds us that this love affair carries risks beyond carbon emissions and arguably war to secure access to the resource. Curious then that a person named Mr HAYWARD is the Chief Executive at BP and that the incident took place in the Gulf of Mexico (which raises the X Factor poser once more).

Teams of volunteers are working to help save local wildlife. Laudible but odd if we think about it as we (humanity) destroy nature bit by bit, sometimes unwittingly, then try to save her! This is the underpinning message in the Secret Inheritance. We need a new dawn!

It’s chaos really. Time for the Beatles Octopus’ Garden.

Global Emergency: Haiti Earthquake

Our intention was to conclude the Watch at end 2009. However, events in Haiti have made us think again. On 8 November 2009, we covered a story about Lucy Jones a seismologist at the US Geological Survey and our anxiety about her working for an organisation looking at Earthquake prediction evaluation.  http://watch.thehaymakerssurvey.com/2009/11/08/x-factor-lucies-cruel-farewell/

Just 2 months after our story, we now have a state of emergency in Haiti. On January 12,  Haiti was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, the country’s most severe earthquake in over 200 years. Widespread damage resulted from the quake, with a majority of buildings collapsing due to poor structural design and construction. The capital city was devastated and up to some 100,000 people are feared dead.

haiti-earthquake.jpg

Normally we would put the earthquake down as an entirely natural occurance, but the timining is odd given the phonetics of the country’s name: Haiti sounds like it begins with the word HAY probably the only country in the world with such phonetics. Did we somehow anticipate the disaster?

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. It has been struck by multiple hurricanes, causing flooding and widespread damage, most recently in 2008 from Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gustav. This prompted Miami herald journalist Leonard Pitts, Jr., to ask “if the planet itself is not conspiring against this humble little nation”.

Haiti was once lush; less than 100 years ago 60% of its original forest covered the lands and mountainous regions. Since then, an estimated 98% of its original forest cover had been cut down, and in the process has destroyed fertile farmland soils, contributing to desertification. It is now extremely vulnerable to natural disasters. In addition to soild erosion, deforestation has caused periodic flooding, as seen on 17 September 2004. tropical storm Jeanne skimmed the north coast of Haiti, leaving 3,006 people dead in flooding and mudslides. Earlier that year in May, floods killed over 3,000 people on Haiti’s southern border with the Dominican Republic.

We do not in any way wish to be disrespectful to the victims in this horrific event and our deepest sympathies go to all concerned. We wish the people of Haiti well as they struggle to respond to the crisis. A huge interrnational aid effort is underway and we have already made our own donation. As their moto says ‘Strength is Unity’ - a lesson for all humanity perhaps.

X-Crossing

Our readers will know all about how our novel poses the question - “do we have the X factor?” That is do we (humanity) have what it takes to preserve our natural world or are we simply too selfish and greedy a species to merit our position as alpha species for very much longer?  Well we’ve seen a number of examples on this Watch of events linked to this point (just enter X factor in the search function below).

Today we have another example to reveal: at the heart of arguably one of Europe’s busiest shopping streets a giant X has appeared in the road. Its a new pedestrian crossing at Oxford Circus based on designs from Tokyo which allows people to cross diagonally as well as straight across.

 oxford-circus-x-crossing.jpg

So in these hey days of consumption we wonder whether the large X at the centre of a shoppers paradise is in reality a poser for humanity!

Anglo-Saxon Treasure Hoard

Terry Herbert, an amateur metal detector, has found the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever discovered. The harvest of over 1,500 pieces of treasure included weapons, coins, helmet decorations and Christian crosses. The first scraps of gold were found by Terry in July with the last pieces removed by a small army of volunteers a couple of weeks ago.  The hoard is believed to have been in the ground for some 1,300 years and has been declared treasure by coroners with a monetary value of £1m.

anglo-saxon-treasure.jpg

Its a magical discovery and we ask, did we foresee it? Page 212 of our novel tells of Bill Darvill’s search for ancient treasure using a metal detector and how he paused now and then to dig the soil of an open field to hunt for gold. It was the prelude to the discovery of Charles Lamb’s journal (page 214). Here’s an extract:

“Legs astride, the metal detector swung too and fro in his [Bill’s] hands like a hypnotic pendulum…. [He] witnessed the heavy clunck as Jonas’ spade struck something buried within the soil. [He] also heard Sarah’s excited shriek, “Yes we’ve found the treasure”.

In response Malachi says, “Open your heart, we’ve got to change. There’s still a chance for us.” He adds in Latin (page 215) “Multorum minibus magnum levator onus” which means “By the hands of many a great load is lightened.”  His words have extra poignancy given a Latin inscription in a strip of gold amongst the Staffordshire hoard which translates in “Rise up O Lord, and may thy enemies be dispersed and they that hate the be dispersed.”

Could it be that the discovery is a timely reminder that we need to work together to salvage the real treasure - the diversity and ecology of the majestic and miraculous planet we inhabit?

Red Alert

A Red Panda has escaped from London Zoo to hide up a tree in Regent’s Park. The rare animal was spotted at 03:00am by a local cameraman Martin Ellerbeck.  Zoo-keepers were unable to coax the creature down so resorted to using a tranquilizer.  An inquiry will be held into how the animal escaped.

red-panda.jpg

Our take on this is simple: RED ALERT for action to preserve Mother Nature! Where’s our evidence? Its another example of an escaped animal to feature on our Watch; the creature was first seen at three - a number key to our project; and he escaped to Regent’s Park - our novel includes several mentions of the antics of the Prince Regent. To cap everything, the Panda’s name was Peter - in our novel we have a cameo appearance from Sir Peter Scott - founder of the WWF and designer of the orginal WWF panda logo. Do the panda’s antics amount to a life imitating art moment?

The Red Panda is also known as a FireFox so here’s a suitable emergency response…
