The Justice Chair

In Argentina politicians have pushed, punched and thrown chairs at each other in a heated session to choose the president of a northern province’s lower house.  The scuffle broke out when legislators tried to stop opposition lawmakers from entering the parliamentary session. The scenes, which led to 10 politicians being injured, were caught on camera.

We see this a significant in the run up to Copenhagen - for differing opinions are likely to emerge. So much is at stake so who knows what spoilling tactics might take place to try to persuade the populise of the right and just action based on the evidence.  Perhaps this helps explain why Charles Lamb’s journal records the Justice Chair - with its runic carving - upon which Samuel Coleridge recites his famous poetry watched secretly by the excluded Lucy Ebbs - Mother Nature personified.  Do you believe in Justice?

X-Factor: Lucie’s cruel farewell!

Our regulars will know we’ve been following the fortunes of Lucie Jones on this year’s X-Factor. Sadly, we have to report that Lucie has been voted off the show at the expense of the controversial twins - John and Edward (Jeward).  Despite putting in a wonderful performance Lucie came in the bottom two in the public vote, probably because the public thought she was safe. In the sing-off she performed ‘One Moment in Time’ whilst the twins did ‘Rock DJ’. Although Lucy was far and away the better performer, Simon Cowell, the lead X-Factor mogul chose to put the decision to the public vote. Lucie had received the least votes so had to bid a tearful farewell at the expense of a couple of lads who can’t sing yet have attracted celebrity status through immense media attention.

Lucie’s eviction and the manner of it comes as no surprise to us.  “Does humanity have the X-Factor?” is a poser within our novel.  Lucie’s plight - Mother Nature in our tale - is perilious yet people assume she’ll be fine and complacency will be our downfall. Even Lucie’s final song ‘One Moment in Time’ was significant given the run up to COP15.  Will we seize that moment in time? Are we going to set Mother Nature free?

A further coincidence is that Lucy Jones is also a seismologist at the US Geological Survey currently working on a multi-hazards demonstration project developing a new programme to integrate hazards science with economics and emergency response to incease community resiliency to natural disaster.  She also serves on the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council - ominous?

Lucy the Sheep

Lucy’s in the headlines again -a sheep in her name is the matter of a legal custody battle.  Last December Bethan Parkinson from Buckley bought her nine year old daughter, Lauren, a pet sheep and called her Lucy. Initially Bethan kept her in stables with her pony but this proved troublesome so she chose to give her temporarily to an animal sanctuary whilst looking for land.  Five months later Bethan returned to claim Lucy but after a dispute which involved the police she produced a receipt and reclaimed the sheep.  However, the animal sanctuary have not given up and have taken the family to court over the pet sheep, under the Return of Goods Act. Next week, a judge will decide Lucy’s fate at a court in Mold.

A curious tug-of-love for Lucy. From our perspective the ovine (Charles Lamb) link is obvious but the use of the Return of Goods Act stands out because humanity has exploited the Earth’s finite resources for many many years whilst feeding the material world that we live under. Its time to Return the Goods!

Mayfair Heist

In our novel Charles Lamb’s journal makes early mention of a May Fair and his desire to love and care for Lucy Ebbs - Mother Nature personified. Whilst in the run up to the discovery of the journal The Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds helped lead us to it.  We also make a link to the prospect of converting peanuts (a metaphor for those with little care for the environment) into diamonds (those who do and seek and take action).

 FROM getattachment1.jpg INTO  diamonds.jpg MEANS business-card-reverse.jpg

Mayfair in London has already featured a few times on this Watch and we have another example: on 6 August Britain’s record gems heist took place in Mayfair.  £40m worth of necklaces, earrings and watches were taken after a gang forced a member of staff to fill a bag with 43 items.  The gang were smartly dressed and wore masks to disguise their features. They made their getaway in a BMW - the same initials as Ben Michael Whittenbury -our self-appointed Earth Champion.

Six people have since been arrested in connection with the robbery, so we now feel comfortable about including the raid in our Watch.  We see it as a timely reminder of the true value of diamonds - they are forever - just what Mother Nature needs.

Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers!

A woman whose lottery ticket was found and cashed in by someone else will receive £15,000 - or half the money on offer. Amanda Stacey, 34, from Swindon, Wiltshire, reportedly found the prize ticket on the floor of her local Co-op. She and her husband spent half the money, but when Dorothy McDonagh reported the ticket as lost the Staceys were arrested and the rest of the money was frozen. The Staceys admitted fraud and false representation and were given suspended sentences. On Friday Michael Stacey was ordered to pay Dorothy McDonagh £15,111.24, the amount the couple hadn’t spent - including interest.

In a discussion forum covering the story the BBC begs the question - ’should finders be keepers and losers be weepers?’ Curious this since Ben makes the statement, ‘Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers’ at the discovery of Lucy’s Locket (page 35).  The contents of which are later revealed to Charles Lamb.  Presumably the message here is that we’re gambling with our future!

A Solar Eclipse - By Jove!

Some 2 billion people across Asia have experienced the longest total eclipse of the sun in the 21st century.

(Source: Lutfar Rahman Nirjhar - www.nirjhar.com )

The eclipse lasted 6.6 minutes and took place at 3.00am Greenwich meantime.  The exceptional duration was because the moon was just 3 hours away from its closest point to Earth in its orbit.  The length of the eclipse will not be surpassed until 30 years into the next century.  The clipse was the second of three to take place in a one month peiod. It was an amazing awe inspiring spectacle falling as it does within our 3 year Watch and taking place so close to the 40th anniversary of the first Apollo Lunar landing.  The moon is subject to much mythology and superstition in cultures the world over.  A full moon features prominiently in our tale at several key moments; at points of discovery and understanding.

The eclipse has also given scientists an opportunity to learn more about the sun.  For example, solar scientist Lucie Green, from University College London was aboard an Amercian cruise ship heading for the Japanese island of Iwo Jima to examine the waves in the corona. Well done Lucie!

Jupiter also receives a mention in the novel - so its rather odd that almost to the day an amateur astronomer reported the discovery of a mysterious scar the size of the Earth near the pole of the gas giant. It has caught NASA scientists by surprise with an early conclusion that the planet was hit by a comet or asteroid. Such an event last took place 15 years ago when Shoemaker 59 crashed into the orb.  News of the impact has stunned the astronmy world. Jupiter also has its share of mythology with the Roman God Jupiter being in charge of cosmic justice. In Rome, in the courts of law people used to swear ‘By Jove’ to witness the oath.

Statue of Liberty Crown Re-opens

As an Independence Day gift to the people of America, the crown on the head of the iconic Statue of Liberty has reopened for the first time since 9/11.  During the next two years, some 50,000 tourists will be able to climb the 168 steps to peer out through the crown to witness the exhilarating views of New York’s skyline and harbour.

statue-of-liberty-crown.jpg

From a Haymakers’ perspective the reopening is poignant and symbolic since our novel features a dream by Charles Lamb in which Lucy Ebbs adopts a pose identical to that of the Statue of Liberty with a beacon held skyward. Her pose was in response to animals fleeing towards her from an oasis set aflame by a crashing ‘bird of iron’!  Within minutes a huge wave appears on the Horizon - then Charles awakes. Alarming yes - but we have to record as we find on this Watch. No apologies - remember the statue is officially entitled, ‘Liberty Enlightening the World’.

On a brighter note here’s a Peanuts video expressing love for the Lady. Enjoy…

Ghost forest at Trafalgar Square

A ghost forest of huge tree trunks from Africa will appear around Nelson’s column in Trafalgar Square this November.  The dramatic artwork will highlight the threat of deforestation. The iconic world reknowned column will be surrounded by stumps of trees that once stood at similar height. The project is the brainchild of artist Angela Palmer who travelled to Ghana to locate naturally fallen trees to use in the display.  The artwork will then move to Copenhagen ahead of the crucial UN Conference on climate change in December.  The fate of the rainforests will be high on the agenda.

ghost-forest-intrafalgar-square.jpg

Our novel records how Ben and Sarah took part in a protest in Trafalgar Square about climate change. Dressed as a polar bear Ben Whittenbury poses beneath Nelson’s column as his daughter takes photos.  Whilst Charles Lamb’s journal records the significance of ‘Nelson and the Bear ‘ a painting by Richard Westall and gives an insight of the trip the Admiral made to the Arctic when just a boy; a venture captured in the painting.

The Age of Stupid

stop-stansted-expansion.jpg

Friday the 13th is embroiled in superstition as being unlucky for some.  So, on a day when campaigners have lost their battle to block the expansion of Stansted Airport, we speculate on the wider implications of the judicial decision.  Stop Stansted Expansion argued that the government did not give proper consideration to the ‘adverse effects’ of the expansion but the High Court Judge Sir Thayne Forbes dismissed the legal challenge arguing that there had been no misinterpretation of air transport policy. SSE were made to pay £20,000 in legal costs.

The decision follows swiftly on the heels of some profound and deeply worrying predictions on climate change from leading scientists at a conference in Copenhagen.  We won’t repeat them here but the message is loud and clear on rising sea levels and temperatures.  We are very much in The Age of Stupid with decisions of this kind replicated worldwide by governments preaching the environmental cause yet acting against it and popular demand in the name of ‘business as usual.’  Where is the democracy? Is it any wonder that some people resort to ‘adolescent’ acts of protest?

green-custard-protest.jpg

So, if we want to watch a horror film on Friday the 13th, try a preview of The Age of Stupid. In common with our tale it includes a take from the future which implores action now to preserve the Earth and creatures we know and love.  The significant difference between the film and our project is that we feel Mother Nature or a force of creation is behind us, leaving a trail of messages and signs to try to convince us beyond the hard evidence being presented by the scientists. Hay - all’s fair in love and war!

Culture Club Crisis

Boy George, the former controversial frontman to the 1980’s band Culture Club, has been given a 15 month prison sentence for false imprisonment and gratuitous violence.  A barrister in the case said that, “At the heart of the matter was a descent into self destructive behaviour.”  The singer’s solicitor later claimed, “George is on the way to recovery, I sincerely hope this sentence doesn’t knock him back.”

This is George in his hey-day! An artist known for wearing a ribbon or two in his hair and an ambassador for diversity in our world.

boy-george.jpg

So, what does this have to do with the environment, we hear you ask? Simple really - in response to Ben Whittenbury’s decision to draw up ‘The Haymakers Survey’ our Magician invited the climate change sceptics to say no to climate chaos and join the Culture Change Club.  The implication is that Boy George’s troubles are a reflection of the unwillingness of many on our planet to take the environment seriously or see any real threat.  The culture change required remains a distant vision.

Allow George to take you back to 1870 …
