In The Earth Emperor’s Eye, Charles Lamb records in his journal a vivid and disturbing dream in which a fireball falls from the sky triggering an enormous tidal wave. It rushes toward Mother Nature personified who stands firm as her beloved creatures flee for cover. It’s an apocolyptic vision that greatly unsettled our essayist.
Charles’ diary also tells of the significance of the Autumn Equinox in highlighting the enormous harm mankind is causing to the natural world. This year the equinox – when day and night are of equal length – falls on 23 September 2015. It happens to be the date when religious cults are speculating a meteorite will hit the Earth of the coast of Puerto Rico, bringing catastrophy to the planet. Domesday!
Given what we have done to the Earth, some will say there’s a case to be made that the human race deserves to be wiped out. We are a plague – a PacMan. Is it now GAME OVER!
Thankfully, though, NASA has dismissed the asteroid strike claim, stating clearly there is no evidence to support it. Phew! Perhaps its just a symbolic reminder that we are bringing about our own demise. Let’s hope so.
