Pig Eats Bling!

At Maize Maze in Easingwold, North Yorkshire, a pig named Ginger has swallowed a diamond from a solitaire ring on the hand of Ann Moon. Farmer Paul Caygill runs the attraction believes Nature will take its course and the ring will turn up in the pig’s sty. Mrs Moon, from Sowerby near Thirsk, had put her hand into the enclosure to pet the animal but it put its mouth to her hand and nibbled at the ring.

Ok an amusing story but so what, you might reasonably ask? Well, our readers will know of Ben Whittenbury’s wish to restore the pig stys at ‘NoBling’ Green, whilst Malachi complains that, ‘It’s gone to pigs and whistles’ implying that we need to rediscover the right working relationship with Mother Nature.  Perhaps the pig is unwittingly reminding humanity to loose our obsession with wealth and other false riches! Go Ginger!

Woe Decry That Icy Tear?

Sarah was surfing YouTube when she came across an intriging video of a girl in Lebanon who cried frozen tears…

The video describes the tears as crystals. Its from 1996 but has resurfaced in popularity recently partly through chain emails.  Some sites suggest the video is a hoax or a simple magic trick.

Truth or fiction the timing of the videos resurface is curious as one of the most important parts of our story is a poem called Shadows, which includes the verse:

“Ah, be ours the task to stop it, ours the task this Earth to keep. With imagination blot it, woe decry industrial creep. Woe decry that icy tear, “Forget me Not,” the time is Near.”

In our tale, the poem was passed to Julia by her Grandmother who advised her to, “Look out for the signs. You have the gift…”  Charles Lamb’s journal reveals how the poem came about and who wrote it - that it captures concerns about the impact of machines upon Mother Nature.

Abbey Road - 40th Anniversary

Another symbolic anniversary relevant to THS; hundreds of Beatles fans have gathered to mark the 40th anniversary of the camera shot of the famous pedestrian (zebra) crossing cover of the Abbey Road album.

A reconstruction took place with Beatles lookalikes - a tribute band known as St Pepper’s only Dartboard Band’ - wearing outfits the same as those worn on the day.  Billie Shears would be pleased! The original picture has been copied many times over by Beatles fans.  We’re especially taken by the iconic crossing - Malachi warns in our novel ‘We’re at the crossroads’. Perhaps that’s why Sir Paul chose to cross the road bare-footed as an unwitting reminder of the human ‘carbon’ footprint!

When visiting Abbey Road Beatles fans also like to leave personal messages on a wall by the roadside. Messages like these…

Abbey Road is also in St John’s Wood and St John’s Church is where Julia saw a ghostly figure wearing a replica ‘St Pepper’ jacket. Mmm. we do have fun don’t we?

Ben’s favourite song from the album is ‘Come Together’ which is what we need to do to address the ongoing environmental challenges. Here’s a video with rare footage of Abbey Road and the recording studios. Enjoy…

Look North!

From time to time we speculate on possible explanations for the curious coincidences between our project and events on our Watch. In one of his crazy outbursts the ever sceptical Bill Darvill joked that, “Maybe its aliens trying to warn us. Hell look at the strange things happening in space - on Venus, Mars and Jupiter - could they have done it? Do they know how much we’re at risk?”  He spoke in jest of course but look at this from ‘Look North’ (to the Polar region perhaps?).

Albino Blackbird!

Yet another example of an albino animal caught on camera in Hertfordshire! This time folk in Woolmer Green (which sounds like Warmer Green) in Welwyn photographed an albino blackbird.

Local residents have delighted at the bird’s antics.  For the benefit of new visitors our novel - and Charles Lamb’s journal - reveals that the appearance of so many albino creatures is a reminder to us of the need to do all we can to preserve the diversity of life on planet Earth.

In another twist, ‘Blackbird’ is of course a much loved Beatles song. Here’s a quirky and most entertaining performance from Sir Paul McCartney…
