Earth Song: Off the Wall and Ben, ‘The force has got a lot of power!’

The eccentric and controversial popstar, Michael Jackson, has celebrated his 50th birthday. It’s not for us to judge his personal life. We just wanted to share some things he said in an interview to a US breakfast show today. He said how much he enjoyed making people happy through his music.  The anniversary is curious as in May 2007, the singer auctioned a red-military jacket similar to that discovered Ben during our adventure.

During his interview, the fallen icon said his happiest time was during the release of the album, ‘Off the Wall!”  Did he have the Royston Cave in mind?

He also had a huge hit with the song, Ben…

Another amazing video is ‘Don’t stop till you get enough’! Just take a look at those stones? They look just like those sacred to the Royston Cave. As Michael said, ‘The force, it’s got a lot off power!”

So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Michael once performed the ‘Earth Song’!

Earth Champions Return

The triumphant GB team returned home today from China with the best Olympics medal haul for 100 years, gathering up 19 golds and 47 medals in total.  The cyclist, Chris Hoy and the swimmer, Rebecca Adlington, have been singled out for special praise accumulating 3 and 2 golds each.  A magnificent achievement from all concerned.  Gold is, of course, a colour synonymous with Hay. A picture…

Little Girl makes a big impression!

Scientists are confident that the ‘La Nina’ effect in the Pacific Ocean will probably lead to the coolest year globally since 2000.  Even so, 2008 looks set to be the 10th warmnest year on record since 1850, and scientists predict that the warming trend will recommence when the effect fades. La Nina translates to ’Little Girl’, which might readily be interpreted as Sarah Whittenbury in action!

Sending out an SOS! <> 3 Gold medals and 3 world records

A man who threw a message in a bottle into the sea when he was just a boy has been reunited with his note 23 years after the event!  Donald Wylie was just 11 when he tossed the bottle into the water at Sandside beach, Orkney.  It was found by eco-volunteers clearing a beach at Fife, Scotland and traced to Mr Wylie, now 33.   The organiser of the beach clean-up said, ‘The message in a bottle was quite a find and surprised us all. It’s remarkable that it should turn up after all this time.”  Maybe the discovery is a coded SOS from Mother Nature?

Meanwhile, the sprinter, Usain Bolt, has been at it again, collecting his 3rd Olympic Gold and his 3rd World Record. Quite a feat! This time he was part of a quartet, the 4×100 relay.  They ran the distance in just 37.10 seconds, smashing the existing record, set in 1992, by 0.3 seconds. A fantastic champion. Congratulations Usain.

Let’s celebrate with some Chariot’s of Fire…

British man mistaken for Mr Gold!

Steve Parry, former British swimmer Bronze medalist turned BBC reporter, has been mistaken for the record-breaking Olympics swimmer Michael Phelps by fans in China.  Parry, who resembles Mr Gold in shape, build and protuding ears was mobbed by a crowd of 100 fans.

Lightening strikes twice in the same place

The athelete, Usain Bolt, has claimed another Olympic Gold and new world record - this time in the 200 metres.  The amazing Jamaican clocked 19.30 seconds, beating Michael Johnson’s record set in 1996. It was one of the most extraordinary achievements in olympic history, for many imagined the existing record was as good as unbeatable.

Animal magic!

Scientists have discovered that Magpies are able to identify their own reflection in a mirror; the first time that self-recognition has been seen in non-mammal. Dr Helmet Prior from the Geothe University in Franfurt found carried out the tests on 5 hand-reared birds, placing coloured stickers on the birds in places where they could only be seen in the mirror.   The magpies became focused on the stickers and sometimes succeeded in removing them.  What’s curious about the discovery is that Malachi refers to the ode, ‘one for sorrow, two for joy’ early on in our tale. The tune is, of course, synonomous with magpies!

Dolphins have also been putting on a show off the coast of Australia.  It seems a wild dolphin is teaching other memers of her group to ‘tail-walk’.  Due to illness, one of the group spent a short time in a dolphinarium 20 years ago and may have picked up the trick there. Experts from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society cannot understand why the dolphins are doing it.  Maybe they’re trying to tell us something?

A ‘bigfoot’ print <> Quicker than a Ray of Light <> A bolt out of the blue!

Mystery surrounds the ‘discovery’ of the remains of the legendary ape-like creature Bigfoot by two men in Georgia, US.  Matt Whitton and Matt Dyer claim to have come across the corpse in the North of the state in June. Bigfoot experts have reacted sceptically to the claims, and are refusing to investigate further. Whatever the truth, the timing of the ‘incident’ is curious - perhaps linked to our carbon footprint?

Another annivesary linked to our project - Madonna, the celebrated Queen of Pop, has turned 50!  Since 1983, the highly-talented artist has had a steady stream of hits making her the most successful female popstar of all time. Her hits included True Blue! She has reinvented herself many times, which is a lesson for us all.

  madonna-50.jpg

Our Watch recorded her appearance at the July 07 Earth Live concert, and we find her ’Hey you’ song especially inspirational.  Happy Birthday Madonna - and thank you for all the beautiful music! Here’s one of Ben’s favourites…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFzeDExYPbw

As if to honour her birthday and Ben’s favourite Madonna song, the sprinter Usain Bolt has set a new world record for the 100 metres.  In the competition’s Blue Ribbon event, he raced like a bolt of lightening, making the line in an amazing 9.69 seconds to claim Olympic gold. He left the rest of the field in his wake.  Given the Frankenstien links in our story, does this mean the human race needs to act in record time on environmental issues?

The power of love!

Another relevant annivesary - this time it’s 100 years since Mills and Boon published their first novel.

 mills-and-boon.jpg

Famed for romantic fiction, their books are sold in 106 countries and translated into 26 languages.  They have over 3 million readers in the UK annually. Their exoctic escapist stories typically feature a tall, dark and handsome type who sweeps a cream-and roses heroine off her feet.   The stories inevitably have happy endings!  Charles Lamb would surely salute them as they celebrate their centenary, given his passion for love, art and nature.  Celebrate if you will…

The World’s Greatest Champion!

The American swimmer, Michael Phelps has broken the record for Olympic gold medals won by claiming his 10th and 11th of all time.  His speed and technique is simply incredible with his underwater kicking technique compared to a dolphin.

phelps.jpg

At only 23, the swimmer could yet claim medals at the 2012 and 2016 events!  Perhaps his most remarkable performance so far has been the 200m freestyle where he claimed his 3rd gold of the games…
